My travels over the past few years have brought me to many interesting places all across Canada and the USA. These opprotunities have allowed me to discover that there are a lot of cool and some not so cool towns and cities in North America so I have made this section of the web site to showcase some of them, while sharing facts, stories, photos and much more.

Abandoned Mine Camp, Nunavut

August 10, 2008

Nunavut is probably one of the least traveled places by most Canadians, Herd of Caribou roaming the tundra maybe because it is so remote, with no roads connecting it to the rest of Canada. Due to the lack of the roads in this area, our means of transportation was mainly by helicopter. And flying everywhere certainly gives you a better place to view the interesting topography created by various different ice ages over time.

Way above the tree line spread all through out the tundra are hundreds of boulder fields, grass and lakes, (and sometimes Caribou) in fact that is almost all you see for miles and miles. That is until you stumble across a mine site. Some of them remind me of something that you might see in say a scifi space type movie. A few that we stopped at were totally deserted much like a ghost town in an western movie. They just left the majority of equipment and every day stuff beyond, doors left unlocked, keys still in vehicles, tools laying around, office stuff etc.

Deserted mine site in Nunavut And, well we couldn't resist, while doing GPS work in the area, during sessions when we had no where to go we decided to explore the area instead of sitting around. It certainly was strange, everything left as if people would be returning soon, and the sound of the wind blowing against the tent style buildings.

We played a few games of pool on a pretty nice pool table in the rec hall, took a Honda ATV for a burn across the tundra, thought about taking the CAT excavator for a ride and what not. There was an airstrip at the camp and many planes and helicopters stop there for fueling, so it is pretty neat that the place is in such good shape with all that stuff just sitting there unlocked. So we too, left everything in tact the way we found it before leaving to move onto another location.

More Nunavut posts to come ...
